Seeing as I can't seem much time to post on here very frequently, and as I don't feel like continuing to pay $7/month for a blog I hardly post on, I'm moving my blog to Blogspot. The new address is www.kevinefflandt.blogspot.com. It can be found here. Please make changes to your bookmarks now. This site here will be up until the end of the month, but all posts will now be made at the Blogspot site.

Sola Scriptura--What Does That Mean Exactly?

Posted on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 05:03PM by Registered CommenterKevin Efflandt | CommentsPost a Comment

The church that I grew up in had the following motto: "The Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible." Is that what we mean by the doctrine of "Sola Scriptura"? Does Sola Scriptura mean that we are to reject all creeds and confessions?

The other day, I was reminded of a very helpful article that appeared in Modern Reformation magazine last year. You may find it here. It's very helpful in understanding just what we mean when we say "Scripture alone."

A Faith Worth Dying For

"Darkness filled the cell known as Brunain (which means dark and gloomy), except for the light that came through a hole in the wall, form which flowed filth from the other prison cells. For weeks the rebel minister imprisoned here had endured torture and inquisition. In the years before his capture, he had fled across Europe because of persecution. In the end his captors hung him. All this he endured for the sake of the truth embodied in the Belgic Confession of Faith. This was the life of Guido de Bres, primary author of the Confession and preacher of its truth."

So begins Danny Hyde's commentary on the Belgic Confession of Faith, which I received in the mail today. From all appearances, this looks to be a very welcome addition to the library of any Reformed Christian, as Hyde looks at each one of the 37 articles of the Belgic Confession. Each chapter ends with a number of study questions, lending itself to a small group study.

In a day when many who call themselves "Reformed" are ashamed and embarrassed of their doctrinal heritage, wanting to jettison the creeds and confessions for something more "relevant" and "practical," we need to turn again to a study of this great document that beautifully summarizes the teaching of God's Word.

You can now purchase this book through Westminster Seminary here. This is the cheapest that you can find it and shipping is only $5.
